DOs study myopia management at the NRC

The Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO) has held the first Myopia Management Conference in Birmingham last month.

The sold-out event took place on Sunday 29 October and was repeated on Monday 30 October to maximise the number of places available. Dedicated to sharing the latest myopia management research and treatment solutions, the one-day conference provided attendees with up to 14 CPD points.

Professor James Wolffsohn presented on prevalence, risks and aetiology of myopia. Dr Alicia Thompson highlighted the importance of paediatric fit for spectacle frames. Dr Neema Ghorbani Mojarrad took delegates through the latest in innovation and communication in myopia management. The lectures were followed by three discussion workshops on spectacle options and myopia management, technology and myopia management, and contact lens options and myopia management. The event also provided attendees with two further online lectures to allow them to learn about pharmaceutical options for myopia management and ortho-K.

Dr Alicia Thompson, ABDO director of education, research and professional development, says, “Thank you to everyone who attended the inaugural clinical conference on myopia management and helped made it such a huge success. The enthusiastic engagement and participation was palpable from early on the Sunday morning until the end of the day on Monday. It was an honour for us to present lectures from such world-renowned speakers.”

Dr Thompson adds, “The sponsors in the exhibition areas proved very popular allowing hands-on demonstrations and showing us their latest products, along with participating in the discussion workshops. We are very grateful for all our sponsors in supporting our event and thank you to the members for their very positive feedback.”

The event was sponsored by BiB, Birmingham Optical, CooperVision, Essilor, Haag-Streit, Hoya, Mark’ennovy, Millmead Optical, Ocumetra, SightGlass Vision, Stepper Eyewear, Topcon, Centrostyle, Menicon, Optimum Rx, Positive Impact, Tomato and Zeiss.
