Optical assistants learn new skills

We hosted ABDO College’s workshop for optical assistants last week, 13 and 14 March. The event was run by college advisor and founding principal, Jo Underwood, with DO and lecturer Frances Mecoy. The first day saw 16 students and the workshop was repeated the next day with 11.

They learned about basic prescription analysis, how to triage red eye, spectacle adjustments and repairs. They used simulation specs to look at how to care for patients with low vision – sight so poor people struggle with everyday activities such as reading and driving. The students enjoyed workshops, peer discussion and seminars.

The learners came from around the country and beyond – the Republic of Ireland, Scotland and Wales and different regions of England. They left with new skills and knowledge they will use for the rest of their careers.
